What Are Semi Truck Power Inverters?

Have you ever been driving in your car and suddenly hear a loud hum? You pull over, check to see what the noise is. The rest of your drive home will be spent with one hand on the wheel and the other hand clutching onto whatever object you can find for dear life. It’s not that we have terrible drivers in Texas, but it seems like there are too many semi-trucks on our roads these days.

They’re all trying to keep up with their deadlines! All those big trucks need power inverters – they use them to convert AC current from a battery into DC current needed by truck equipment/motors. This post will discuss how different types of power inverters work, as well as which ones are best for semi-trucks.

A power inverter needs the required input voltage in order to operate. There are two common types of power inverters for semi-trucks– the 12-Volt power inverters and the 24-Volt power inverters.

The 12-Volt DC inverters will produce 120 volts of AC power for trucks with 12-Volts DC input voltage. Before purchasing a power inverter, check that your truck can support 12-Volts. Also, check that the appliances also support the same type of voltage power. 12-Volt inverters range from 150 Watts to 3000 watts of AC power.

The 24-Volt power inverters, on the other hand, use 24-Volts DC input voltage. They also produce 120 volts of AC power and can range from 150 to 3000 watts of AC power.

Semi Truck Power Inverter: Installation

You can use a cigarette lighter adapter to connect a small-load power inverter with current loads of 150 watts or less. This is ideal when you will not use large equipment or if you are only going to use the power inverter rarely.

For any appliances with higher current loads, approximately above 150 watts, use a power cable and connect it to the positive side (+) of your truck’s battery terminal. Use an in-line fuse or circuit breaker to prevent short-circuits. Make sure that you use power rings to connect the cables to the power source to secure it better to the battery post.

Semi Truck Power Inverter: Grounding Inverters

The ground wire should make direct contact with the bare metal of the truck or the negative (-) battery terminal. Also, make sure that the ground terminal has the same gauge as the power cable.

Locate the existing bolt or screw that makes contact with the truck’s body near the inverter. Then, unscrew or remove the bolt and clean it by scraping away the dirt and grime. To ensure that the ground wire maintains solid contact with your truck’s body, you can use a star washer. Slip a ring terminal underneath the washer after soldering it onto the ground wire, and then put the bolt or screw back on.

Semi Truck Power Inverters: Uses

Semi-truck owners can use the power inverter to convert DC to AC power to run a variety of small appliances and electronic gadgets. When traveling and there is a need to power a laptop, you can use the power inverter to do so.

Household appliances such as microwave ovens, coffee pots, toasters, and televisions can also benefit from a power inverter when needed. Outdoor camping, for example, will be more enjoyable when you can use these convenient appliances using the power inverter.

So if you’re looking for a power inverter to keep your electronics and appliances running while on the road, be sure to check out our new line of semi-truck power inverters.
